friend
someone who can carry a decent conversation with, and talk is not limited to only one area of your life, nor only happy ones for that matter. but then again, there are many different types of friends. Good-time buddy, good friends, not-so-good friend, etc
acquaintance
are people you meet along the way, esp when you work, or when there is a social meeting or when you are networking. acquaintances eventually becomes a friend when you know more abt them.

a friend is someone you trust who does not judge you on what you wear or listen to or your personal lifestyle, and doesn't use those things against you and can keep your secret if you share one.
an aquaintance is someone you know and see frequently who isn't a freind as described above.

My dog's mother had a best friend that was a cat. They would spend hours playing and napping together in the back yard.

Friend -
Someone that acknowledges your existence usually with the phrase "hi" or "yo", when encountered. Of course the shear amount of friend-types are mind boggling, so I won`t even start mentioning them. Unique to oneself I`d say.
Acquaintance -
This word is only used in rare occasions when your girlfriend/boyfriend catches you talking with another cute girl/guy and asks you about your status quo with that particular person.
I`d say that`s pretty accurate. Whaddya you think?
